Professional Tip of the Month
Remembering Names
The ability to remember the names of people you meet will serve you well in business and social situations. It’s an excellent way to begin a relationship that makes a lasting impression. Everyone enjoys hearing their name. Dale Carnegie said, ”A person’s name in any language is the sweetest sound.” Using a person’s name conveys respect for them both personally and professionally, and makes them feel important. Here are a three simple, but powerful ways to help you remember names.
1. Be Prepared!
The first step is to prepare yourself mentally before an event. Make a conscious decision to remember all the names of the people you are about to meet.
2. Pay Attention!
When you are being introduced to someone, listen carefully to their name and FOCUS on it. If you don’t get it the first time, politely ask them to repeat it. If the name is unusual, ask them to spell it. Concentration and listening are the keys here.
3. Use the Name Several Times in Conversation
When you hear someone’s name, repeat it out loud as soon as possible in conversation. Add it to the beginning and ending of your meeting: “It’s a pleasure to meet you, John” or “nice talking to you, Mary.” Saying it immediately and frequently will help reinforce the name.
It’s amazing how quickly you can master this skill if you keep practicing. It will help you present yourself with greater confidence, enhance your professional image and sharpen your memory skills! + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + +
